Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 3D Initiative India

At first there was a seed. This seed was a tiny little idea in the mind of one Shefali A. While all other Whovian’s in India thought, “Damn it, not only is BBC Entertainment cancelled in India, but I’m sure the 3D special won’t release in the theaters either.” and started wondering about what torrent to get, this fantastic girl, in the middle of hot and sweaty Mumbai sat down and whispered,

I really really want them to release an imax version here…. maybe we can request it….

The seed grew, and took root, and became what I’m going to refer as the greatΒ Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 3D Initiative India.

Phew, that was a mouthful.

What exactly are we trying to achieve here ? If you are a Whovian in India, we’re going to try to make your dreams (well at least the one you’ve been having since the 7th Series Finale) come true !!

In Mumbai…

We are going to approach the manager in of a theater in Mumbai and convince him to screen the 50th Anniversary Special just for a day in a theater near you. But, for that to happen, we’re first going to need all the fans to come out in support. We will need to prove to the theater manager, that his theater is not going to be empty on this one day, the 24th of November, 2013. And for that, in typical Whovian style, we take a leaf from The Doctor’s (or in this case Clara’s book). No protests, no marches, nothing. All you need to do to show your solidarity, is fill in one single form.

This one actually :: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 3D Initiative, India

Elsewhere in India…

No matter if you’re not from Mumbai. Fill in your name, email, city and state in the form above. Also mention clearly on the form whether you’re willing to help out with the leg work. In this case, leg work would mean speaking to theater managers in your area about the 3D screening if you have enough Whovians willing to attend the show. Once a city is reaching the 50 participants mark, I will email the people who have opted to help out in this, and they will coordinate with the rest of you, talk to the managers and **fingers crossed** set up a show time.

All you need to do this time, is share the link to this form, or this blog, and tag in all your fellow Whovian friends or family. The more entries we get in the form, the more likely it is that your favorite show will be aired in all its 3D goodness in a theater close to you.

Geronimo !!

In the words of 9th (or maybe the 10th, depending on which of the many theories floating about that you support currently)

You were fantastic… and you know what…. so was I

  1. Hey Sasha! I’m totally nerding out over finding another Whovian in India. I’ve managed to convert my sister, but haven’t been successful with anyone else.

I see you’re close to reaching 50 in Mumbai. I may consider flying out to Mumbai if the screening does take place. (Yeah, I haven’t considered flying there specifically to meet family in years, but at the mention of Doctor Who I’m looking up ticket costs…lovely, innit?)

    Do get in touch!

    • Hey Radha, We’d love to have you join us in Mumbai. I’m thinking we go nuts and have a completely DW themed event tshirts, markings on your hands you can’t explain, sneakers, and all πŸ™‚ And have a lunch or dinner after the show maybe πŸ™‚ Wonder how many people would join in on that ?

      • Hi! I’m in Delhi and I’m really devastated… I can see there’s no show in Delhi and I can’t fly down cause its my birthday on 22nd and also my mom won’t let me. Do I still have hope or do I just have to watch it online afterwards… πŸ˜›
Anyway, you guys enjoy! Lol, I’m so jealous.

    • OMG A WHOVIANNNN!!!!
I am literally on the floor fangirling!
So where exactly is the meet????
      Would be great to know…
if it’s anywhere near Phoenix, it would be great:)
      Thanks Sweetie:)

    • Hi Krylor, Never worry, you’re among friends πŸ™‚ You have 4 months more, try converting some friends and family to join the Whoniverse. The more the merrier.

  2. I am so psyched to find Whovians in here…I had honestly given up hope. It’s awesome that there is at least a chance of the anniversary special do be broadcast in Mumbai..

  4. Unfortunately none of the people I know are into watching Dr WHO!.
I have been a Dr Who aficionado since I was a kid, back in those days there were the Dr Who books by Terrance dicks and that’s how it all started. In fact I would go to the extent of saying that some of those books are even better than the televised versions.

    • You’re in good company πŸ™‚ Don’t worry. I’m hoping that the Anniversary special air in Mumbai at the very least. If so, we have 269 Whovians around India, and 90 in Mumbai who can quite possibly fly down for the day if they really love the show. We’ll make a day of it, and have a blast !!

      • The funny thing is many years later, when I got to see the some of the classic episodes, I was flabbergasted by the poor quality of production.
Beebs in those days was a pretty low budget affair, the books are still a classic, the quality of writing was top notch, specially Terrance Dicks.
In fact one cringe worthy adventure “The Two Doctors” was really a very very well written book.

The quality of script sadly hasn’t improved as much as it should have, this is specially true if you look and compare with other science fiction series like “Star Trek” , “Battle Star Galatica” , “Farscape”.

All that said and done, it is still a fun watch ( if you ignore the bad science part)

        Regards,
        Krylor

  5. anyone in delhi interested alone me wont be enough
every whovian has been waiting for this
come in delhi people its the doctor n the daleks …!!!
please fill the form so that it would be telecasted in delhi too

    • Hi Chuck,
Could you send me your email address ? I’d love to promote the effort !! We’ve got a huge fan base that is going to be very disappointed if the BBC does not notice that India’s kicking and screaming against being left out of the Countries of Release.

I have all the statistics, and any other information you may need.

Thanks for the support from Doctor Who News πŸ™‚

  6. Wow… finally India Whovians…
I’m in Chandigarh these days and I’m sad to say.. but there is a real shortage of whovians around me… I made one who was my best shot watch DoctorWho, but even he’s more interested in Suits and all…
But its great to know you guys are here!!
Do add me, follow me, ping me or whatever! I’m with rahulgr8888 everywhere!
oh and tell me how many are there from chandigarh? is it being screened anywhere in India?
AND I NEED some Doctor Who stuff… desperate here!! I can only find a sonic screwdriver and thats like 11k.. No tees, no canvases, no TARDIS even… anyone know any source for this stuff??
It was awesome finding you people!!

    • Go to ebay global easy buy and search for doctor who. There are sone really nice t-shirts for around Rs. 2-3000 .
Btw, please let me know if there’s any Doctor Who fan in Allahabad

      • I have a tie up with a local company that’s also distributing DW merchandise. I’ll tag the concerned person into this post πŸ™‚

  7. The Day of the doctor is being released in over 75 countries.. and not in india. What a shame.
I live in Allahabad and I can only convince my kins to watch it. I know its not enough.. Perhaps I should suffice with the Torrent version. 😦

  8. Firstly, it’s so amazing to see so many Indian Whovians here! I always thought we were a very small number…
Secondly, the 50th won’t be telecast in India 😦 So either we have to rely on illegal means to watch it or can we still do something to get it here?? (I know only a month remains, still)
Thirdly, if many of you Whovians are in Mumbai, please do let me know. maybe we can work something out. πŸ˜€
    Thanks & Geronimo!

  9. Hello

Absolutely gobsmacked by the number of DW fans, please please count me in if you are going to arrange a DW screening in Mumbai.
Only a month to I can’t wait for it and I know it is going to be “FANTASTIC”

Have you checked out the promo for it, it’s amazing, spectacular visual effects packing 50 years of the doctor’s life. After all it the the most important “day of the Doctor”.

    Allonsy!!!

  10. Hey guys
Uhm I am Whovian from Delhi and I saw that the number of signees from Delhi has reached 70. So I was wondering if anything is happening on the Delhi front?

  11. Hi!

I’m so glad I found this page while searching for the 50th anniversary special screenings. It’s not very easy to find whovians in India.

I’m from Mumbai, and I really hope we can get this done. Please contact me if I can help in any way.

I’d love to meet whovians besides the screening too.

    Cheers!

  12. Hi,
I’m so glad i found this!! Any news on the screening? Please do let me know if you need help in any way!

And I would like to personally thank you for taking an initiative on behalf of all the Whovians of India! You deserve all the world’s Jelly Babies and Jammy Dodgers. πŸ˜€

    Allons-y!

  13. Hey there,
I noticed 94+ Whovians from Calcutta have signed the online form (including me), and not one has commented on this forum. It felt like it’s my duty to let you know that we do exist. Too bad I found this page so late, hence, it’s impossible to convince any theatre managers to screen the episode at this point. Better late than never to have found you guys anyway!
Just four days to go for ‘The Day of the Doctor’! Just wanted to let you know that a bunch of us from Calcutta are meeting up to watch the episode together.
Fellow Whovians, connect on twitter if you’d like to grow our community: Z_paws. πŸ™‚

      • Hi Som,
If you don’t mind helping with the organization, can you hunt around for meet up points in Calcutta where the 100 odd Whovians can meet ? Whether to watch the torrent version or to discuss the episode we watched the night before.

In Mumbai I’m trying for a nice big Whovian get together on 24th November, at a coffee place with a TV. Hopefully if we can’t air the actual episode, we can show some fandom videos, or maybe the 1963 Unearthly Child release πŸ˜€

Do let me know if you can help organize something similar in Calcutta πŸ™‚

        Allons-y !!
        Sasha

    • Hi Zainab,
I sent you the invite to the DW Event in your city. If you can help organize, please find a cafe or a restaurant where the Whovians of Calcutta can meet up to watch the episode or to meet up after the episode is launched on Sunday for a coffee, some jelly babies and jammy dodgers πŸ˜€

Invite the rest of your friends to the facebook event as well πŸ™‚

Looking forward to a very Whovian weekend,
      Sasha

    • Hi Suhan,
26 people in Pune Signed up. If you’re ready to help organize a location in Pune where you can all get together to watch the episode over a nice cuppa tea and some jammy dodgers, do let me know. I’ll send you the contact details for the Pune Whovians πŸ˜€

      Geronimo
      Sasha

  14. Wow! I never really thought there would be so many Whovians in INDIA! This is FANTASTIC. I really cannot contain my joy right now. You have made me so so happy.

    • There are about 700 of us on a group called Doctor Who United India πŸ™‚ We have monthly meets and you’re welcome to join us πŸ™‚
PS :: I’m thrilled and excited sooo many Whovians exist in India too πŸ˜€ I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw the crowd at the 50th πŸ˜€
